Pluralist democracy is supposed to be based on open access to the political process, so that various groups in society see politics and governance as an opportunity to address their grievances. But when establishment politics breaks down, groups sometimes organize into social movements to generate social change. A social movement must do three things to create and sustain itself: diagnose a social problem, offer a prognosis (how to fix the problem), and motivate people to participate given the costs of activities outside of establishment politics.

Identify a contemporary social movement—since today is May Day, think about movements for economic and social justice—and briefly describe how the movement frames (diagnosis, prognosis, and motivation) its main issue.
